[ The video feed clicks on, and a smiling Joey is sitting on the floor of his MAC apartment. He gives a small wave, before he really starts signing. He's not going slow for the benefit of anyone just learning. It's all fingers and hands flying all over the place and strong, nearly exaggerated facial expressions. ]

I almost feel like I should apologize for doing this in ASL, but I don't mean for it to be rude. I just wanted to actually talk for a change. It's always nice to communicate in such a free form, where everything is flowing and beautiful.

This City has taken some adjustment. When I got here, I thought it was going to be simple. I remember thinking that it's New York, how different could it be?

[ Small pause. He shakes his head and lets out a little huff of air, gives a half smile that grows back into a real one.]

OK, so I was being naive about it. I took a few weeks to explore the City and find places that should be here. Nice to see that the Met, MOMA, and NYSD are all in the same location. The NYSD, especially. I got a job there last week, so I can finally stop trying to feed myself on the stipend.

Which brings me to why I'm posting this. I got my first paycheck today, and I'd like to do something different. I've had weeks of parks and open-air fairs. What's a good restaurant, the latest club, the best show? And does anyone want to go? I promise I don't bite, and I write fast.

So, if you've followed me this far, what's your favorite work of art? Contemporary City artists would be awesome, too.

[ There is a text file attached that has a translation neatly typed in the proper spoken grammar that is written in this post (ASL has wildly different grammatical structure). The only thing missing is his last question about art. Yes, he's deliberately hunting out anyone who reads sign. ]

When life gives you lemons, they tell you to make lemonade. That's an over-simplification. Sometimes, there's not enough sweetness in your life; lemonade needs a lot of sugar to overpower the bitterness. I always let the ice cubes melt to dilute it.

I've got my own little cliche for days like today, when everything goes bizarre and all I can do is sit here and wonder what just happened. A few years ago, I heard a pair of art students trying to out-reference each other in a discussion of the merits of modern art as art. One said, "What are Piet Mondrian's works reacting to? The invasion of Holland by Flatland?"

So, when you get invaded by Flatland, paint like Piet Mondrian. The book, painting style, and cliche are all over-simplifications, in their own way. It has a symmetry. It fits. Just watch out for acute triangles.

I guess that means I should call this my Composition I in Red, Blue and Yellow. I don't know what's going on, but I think I'm not going to find out anything unless I ask. My name's Joseph Wilson. If anyone wants to help me fill in some of the blank spots, I've got a lot of questions. I grabbed the brochures, I've had some time to play with this device, and I'm not getting any less confused.
