[the voice clicks on and, after a panicked pause, Connors starts to speak]

I'm back?

[The dawning sense of horror pretty much takes over as he realizes oh shit, he's actually back. When Connors speaks again, it's slightly panicked.]

Oh God, I'm back. You've got to lock me up. I don't care that I haven't done anything here, you've got to lock me back up. Put me in an asylum, in the jail, do something. I can't be out here. Please.

[He pauses for a second, then starts talking again, not really knowing what to do now.]

And Gwen? If you're here, then I'm so sorry.

Doctor Connors? What happened? [Beat.] Someone may have told you this already, but Gwen's been sent home. The one from your universe, is she--?

[He can't even say it.]

She's fine. Don't worry, she's fine. [A pause.]

You know what you warned me about? It happened.

Thank god.

[At a normal volume:] I ... thought that might be what happened. Are you all right? And everyone back home?

...for the most part, yes. Things are fine back home.

It should be all gone. [But you can tell from Connors' voice that he isn't entirely sure about that 'should be']

But you can see why I don't want to be around others. Better safe than sorry.

Well, hey, it's a good thing you're back in the City, right? We're practically swarming with scientists who know all about superpowers, and how to make sure they're off.

I suppose we do.

[and this is as private and encrypted as he can possibly make it]
Before I go with the warden, however, there is something I need to tell you. I don't know if it's true where you're from, but back home...you're Spider-Man.

Believe me, I won't tell anybody if it is true. I don't plan on telling anybody anyway.

[LONG PAUSE.]

...What's happening now? You're going into protective custody?

I am. I need to pay for what I've done.

[There's a bit of a pause on his end.]

I killed Gwen's father back home. I'm sorry, Peter.

[That causes a pang, never mind that it's been a good decade since Peter held a dying Captain Stacy in his arms. Out loud, he sighs.]

Back home it was Doctor Octopus. Seems like some people always get the same endings, even when their stories are different.

I'm sorry, Peter.

It's not your fault. [He even believes that, mostly.] You couldn't have known what would happen.

It is my fault. After I took the first dose of the serum...I should have realized what was wrong. I know my mind was warped, but I still had my common sense. I should have done something instead of what I did.

We should ... talk about this. ["This" meaning more than Connors turning into the Lizard.] But probably not on the network, even with encryption.

Then it might have to wait a while. I'm checking myself into the city asylum.
