[Even three years past the end of the war, even after she and the rest of the Animorphs had been out about who they were, Cassie couldn't shake that basic need to be overly cautious. She had no idea if the Yeerks were here in this place, in this new dimension. If they had control over the population or not.

So instead of video, Cassie switches on the voice function.

Her tone is friendly, if not a bit confused and cautious:] Well, this is definitely weird [...but she should almost be used to it, right? The Ellimist had whisked the Animorphs away to different planets and dimensions on more than one occasion.]

So yeah, um. Hello everyone! I'm pretty new here, apparently.

The computer and the pamphlet I read said stuff about being a hero? I think there may've been a mistake or something. [Not that she minded the label (even after it'd become slightly wearisome back home). But really, she'd done her time. Tenfold.]

Anyone out there that can fill me in a little bit more?

Also--[the video flicks on for a few seconds to show a dog]--this little guy has been following me around since I got here. He doesn't have a collar or anything. Is anyone missing a dog?

It's a cute dog.

[Cassie kneels down, still out of the feed's view herself, and scratches the pug behind the ears. He wags his tail enthusiastically and doggie-grins into the comm feed, then excitedly pads around in a circle.]

Isn't he? I'm hoping to find his owner, but nobody around the block seems to know whose dog it is. And no one's claimed him on here either.

You might get to keep him then. Someone might have just abandoned him.

Possibly! I thought I might drop by the nearest animal shelter first, if I can find where one is.

And I hope not, but it seems like that might be likely.

Don't take him to the shelter. What if he never gets adopted?

Oh, well it was more to see if anyone had been there looking for him. Sometimes people stop by shelters to see if their pet's been brought in.

I think after twenty-four hours if no one's claimed him, I could take him. That is, if the MAC apartments allows pets?

I think it does. But really, we all got powers. What landlord's going to argue with any of us about pets?

Okay! I'm hoping so.

[Then a pause. She'd quickly skimmed over the pamphlet when she'd first arrived, but she remembered that it'd been mentioned somewhere in it.] So everyone here does have powers?

Everyone I know does. A lot of them had powers before this place, but some got them just for being here.

Oh, wow. That's pretty cool [and maybe a bit odd.

But, really, everything about this whole situation with the Porter and different dimensions and all was odd.] What's your power?

Did you get that power when you came here?

Nah, I had it for months back home.

[Pause. Well, she's heard and seen some weird stuff before--and Cassie could morph into animals herself. So worlds with magic weren't too far of a stretch to believe, right?]

So you had magic back home? What sort of magic?

The kind that makes fire appear and makes stuff do what you want.

Oh. [Pause] What stuff can you control? Like inanimate objects? Or people?

Objects. I knew someone who could control people but I'll never try to see if I can.
