This is probably a strange question, ah... is anyone familiar with the procedure for guardianship? If anyone does, I would appreciate a moment of your time. Thank you.

[ He clears his throat, trying to hide the slight embarrassment in his voice. ]

A — [ Gil cuts himself off there, struggling to find the correct word for this. Friend? Acquaintance? Ally? Work partner? ]

Someone from my world has shown up recently. She's still getting a lay of the City and this era, but she's requested to meet some of you in person. We'll be holding a dinner Sunday evening at six o'clock at the house.

If you need the address I'll provide it. [ A beat. ] And let me know if you won't be able to attend.

( ooc: due to the limit on filters, even if your character is friends with gil and wasn't mentioned above you can still comment and he'll likely invite them. he's just shy with some folk!! also, sharon/[personal profile] auntyquated will be replying in here as well. )

I would be better equipped personally to inform you of the measures necessary for emancipation, but that's something of the opposite, isn't it? I had a friend who was once legally placed under the guardianship of another, however.

Well, human laws have a ridiculous habit of not taking a person seriously while they're under a certain age. From what I understood of the concept when I was undergoing the process, emancipation would generally be severing the legal authority of an adult guardian, but it must be performed when those guardians were never present to begin with as well if an untended minor wishes to conduct their own affairs.

It's just a ridiculous hurdle your society's put on the young, as far as I was able to tell, yet no less necessary to do anyway.

[ you're welcome for the irrelevant information and opinion, gil. ]

I'm sure Matthew would have known quite a bit about it, but he's gone now, I hear. Though it doesn't seem you needed it either way.

Yeah, human. As opposed to what I am, being from an "alien" world in an "alien" universe. It would be funny how often the two are taken to be mutually exclusive, except it isn't.

[ but she isn't here to rant about the connotations of the word "alien". ] It isn't so much that what constituted [ because the past tense is important ] an adult is different so much as that it was entirely irrelevant to one's affairs on the planet's surface, given that the age of majority wasn't celebrated by becoming a legally viable individual so much as it involved being banished to join the imperial fleet off-planet.

What sort of differences have you encountered?

Sounds nice.

[ she has literally no idea, just your average self-sufficient sixteen year old wishing adults pitied and pandered a little less often. ] And how far off would that be?

Mm. It can be a rough age to be on your own. [ she was a little younger than that herself when she had to start being responsible for everyone else. ] My advice, don't let her think she has to be, no matter the expectations she emerges from. You seem to care enough about her, you need to make sure she knows that, and don't let it be communicated only through words.

I'll keep it in mind if the occasion should arise where I'll need to.

[ she wonders if that's the same sort of thing people say about her. she's strong, she can obviously make it own her own. kanaya certainly puts enough effort into giving the impression, but she's never really believed it. somehow the idea that a complete stranger may potentially have the same problem doesn't sit right with her. ]

Don't take it for granted. Don't let yourself think less of her capabilities, either, but know that if she trusts you enough to allow the question of guardianship be fielded, you may be more important to her than you realize. Especially here, in a strange world that doesn't seem to fit the expectations of the one you left behind.

[ she has that effect on people. probably because she scrutinizes way more often than she ought to, especially when she's hella projecting. ]

That may be in normal circumstances, but you'll be the veteran now. There are things you've come to now here that she won't yet be privy to, and your help can make that transition much easier.

Good, then it sounds like you'll have your new position well in hand. And, if you're lucky, she'll do the same for you.

That's generally how we best survive here.

[ if she's honest with herself, which she isn't often, she lives for that sort of reaction and the validation it carries. ]

Maryam, but Kanaya is probably better. It's should only fair to wish you luck from here, shouldn't it, Mister...?

Very well, Gilbert. I suppose neither of us are much for titles, then, despite finding ourselves in situations that could make them appropriate.

Well, for one thing, I think "Ms." might apply better from a technical perspective of the etiquette, given what you would now know from our discussion. [ it's more adult that way, which is all that really matters to her. ]

But more than that, I'm afraid it may be overly formal in a context that isn't.

Different in which way? The general differences are numerous enough that it's difficult to really compare some things, honorifics included.
