006; Voice

Two questions, possibly related.

One -- how can you tell when someone's been Ported out? I haven't had it happen to me yet, so... I was wondering.

[ He pauses, thinking of how to phrase this next question. ]

Two -- not to alarm anyone, but has anyone seen Matt Murdock lately? He hasn't been coming into work or answering his calls. Once, I could understand, but it's been three days, and... [ Deep, anxious breath. ] I'm a little concerned.

I'm of the understanding that the only ways to be certain are to have been physically there when the person has vanished, or...to know someone with the power to be sure. Barring both of those, I'm not sure if there's very much to tell for certain.

[slight pause. apologetic:] I'm afraid I've not heard from Matt Murdock in some time. Do you need help trying to locate him?

Fantastic. I don't suppose you would know of anyone with that power, would you?

[ Then there's a pause, and the sound of paper being ruffled. Someone's looking through case files. ] Sorry, just a second, I-- ah. That's right. You provided him with testimony, didn't you? If you're offering, I... wouldn't mind some assistance.

I do, but...[trailing off in an air of reluctance. hiei's not exactly...er...

anyway.]

Yes, I did. I'm called Soldier Blue. I will help if I can, though my efforts may only confirm him here or not in this city alone. If he is elsewhere, then...

Yes?

[ Terse. ] Reilly Tyne. Murdock's assistant. Nice to meet you, sorry it's under these circumstances.

..and if he's still here, I will find him. That's all there is to it.

It's not your fault, Reilly Tyne. I'm glad to know you, regardless.

[more pause. mm, well...]

I will see what can be done about locating him on a broader scale, but I would have to meet with you first. I haven't met him in person to know who I'm looking for, but if I could see some memory of him, then it's possible I could find him.

[ Always pausing, forever and ever. ] A memory--?

Okay, okay. It's fine. If that might work, sure. When could you meet?

Right away, if necessary. You need only tell me when and were.

I'm at Murdock's office and I can make some time right now. Is that all right?

Yes. [a slight pause, ah–] If you could tell me where that is, as far as landmarks go...

[whichever you prefer is cool with me!]

It's, ah, it's in Hell's Kitchen-- wait no, not home, forget that. Go [location and details here ].

[he thanks reilly after a moment of careful listening, disconnecting and already preparing to be on his way.

teleporting right into the middle of an office was probably impolite (and unusual), so he flies down to the building outside, using the door like anybody else would. he's only got a voice to go by, so blue wanders in and strains to listen for reilly's thoughts to lead him where he needs to go.]

[ Reilly, buried under a pile of paperwork he's desperately scanning for clues, jolts up as his senses go wild. What --?

Oh, right, Soldier Blue. Shaking his head, he begins to head downstairs, outside the building. Thinking only of how this better help Matt. ]

[it's a little disorienting (and embarrassing), having passed him without knowing it. blue picks up on his train of thought and heads back outside, approaching and walking into view before speaking up.]

Reilly Tyne? Hello.

[ Reilly smiles when he spots him, looking more than a little exhausted. ] Soldier Blue? Hello.

[there's a faint note of relief in his reply, smiling in return, apologetic.]

I'm sorry if you've waited to long. I will help you now. Is there a quieter place near? With few people to distract...

Don't worry, it's fine. After all, this is sort of short notice...

[ Starts heading up the stairs, turning to face Blue. ] What about my office? Would that work? It's a bit of a mess right now, but--

Yes, it should. [blue nods, following along without complaint.]

[ Reilly moves a few paper stacks here and there, freeing up the chairs for Blue before slumping back into his own chair, looking like he's ready to nap on the desk. ] Like I said, sorry it's kind of a mess. Uh, do you want anything? I could ask Gemma...

Or we could just start. However we start this.

[blue keeps a fair distance to allow reilly to move about as he pleased, noting his stress and exhaustion and keeping quiet until prompted. he shakes his head at the inquiries, keeping his expression mild.]

I will begin. [stepping up, his hands are drawn up and gesture vaguely as he explains.] All you need to do is attempt to clear your mind and think only on Matt Murdock as truthfully as you can. The more clear a picture of him and his personality, the more clearly he will be to me. That's how I will find him.

I'll only see what you allow me to, nothing more. So, please...

A clear memory... [ He takes a deep breath. ] I can try. Though we do have a tendency to get some rather, ah, confusing situations.

[ As soon as he shuts his eyes, Blue might be able to see what he means: brief flashes of the Matt back home - the spirit, not the man - run through Reilly's mind before he's able to focus on the Matt here. Once he does, however, the memory is clear: their first meeting. When they almost came to blows, Murdock determined to protect his friend's daughter from what he assumed was an impostor.

He hopes it's enough. ]

[blue watches and listens...and feels, because there's always that mix of empathy that comes with looking into someone else's memories. he lets reilly think as he will, only once prompting No, not what you think about it; only what you saw and heard telepathically.

he opens his eyes in tandem with reilly, nodding.]

Thank you. [a slight pause, considering what he'd seen.] I'm not certain that I'll have much success...Memories tend to skew things with our own feelings and opinions. A person is usually different than the memory of them, but...it's a start. And I'll try.

[he steps away towards a corner of the room, out of the way of a lot of things.] It may take me a while; please don't feel the need to stay long even if I must. So long as no one rushes in...[he sighs a little, bringing his hands to his amplifiers and closing his eyes. he glows for the second it takes for his mind to leave his body, quiet and still and unmoving while he scours portions of the city...]

[ Reilly's quiet for, well, quite a while afterwards. He never has been comfortable with letting people in his head for whatever reason. Distractedly, he nods along as Blue talks, until he finally notices the glowing. ] No, thank you for trying, even if it doesn't -- whoa!

[ Without another word, he quietly rushes for the door, making sure it's locked. He even gives the windows a glance, checking to be certain they can't be seen. He's had some practice hiding things in his office, it seems. ] I don't mind staying, but geez, warn me about the lightshow a little sooner next time.

[blue misses the request, already far away and searching. he doesn't move or speak at all for the next, say, forty-five minutes.

the second glow announces his return, exhaling like he'd been holding that breath and leaning up against the wall. he looks down at the floor momentarily before glancing up to find reilly still there; blue gives a vague, apologetic smile.]

[ Reilly returns the smile, somewhat, although he mostly just looks confused. ] Uh, hey! Did it work?

[he shakes his head a bit.] I looked and listened for things you showed me, but...there are a lot of people in this city that gave off similar notions in ways. I tried listening for a voice, but I didn't hear one. Not his.

[a pause.]

I did not cover enough of the city to be certain, but...I may not be able to find him with my own power.
