[A blank wall. Or a backdrop. Suddenly, the shadow of a girl with a giant bow in her hair, wearing a short skirt and puff-sleeve blouse, marches into view.]

Extra! Extra!

[And now she's holding up a frame, peering through. The shadow with the braid, B-ko, appears with clasped hands.]

Mirror mirror on the wall, please tell me how my hair looks today!

[The one with the frame, A-ko, tilts her head.]

It looks absolutely wonderful! You are surely the fairest in the land!

[B-ko pops up again, wearing a hat and trench coat. She speaks in a slightly deeper voice.]

Mirror mirror on the wall, please tell me how my outfit looks today.

[A-ko tilts her head in the opposite direction.]

It looks absolutely wonderful! You are surely the fairest in the land!

[B-ko pops up once more, this time with glasses and a mustache. She speaks in an even deeper voice.]

Mirror mirror on the wall, please tell me how my mustache looks today.

[A-ko tilts her head back the other way.]

It looks absolutely wonderful! You are surely the fairest in the land!

[B-ko pulls off her disguise, pointing an accusing finger at the mirror.]

I finally see what your game is! You'll tell anyone they're the fairest in the land, no matter who they are.

[A-ko spins the frame around and around.]

But that's the role of a magic mirror! They tell you exactly what you want to hear. Any normal glass can show you the truth!

[B-ko readies a baseball bat.]

You're the reason that guy I liked at school never asked me to the dance!

[A-ko backs away, still clutching the mirror.]

You can't break a mirror! It's seven years bad luck!

[The sound of breaking glass.]

Whenever these messages appear, it foreshadows some kind of...event. Usually caused by or related to the machine which brought us all here.

No one knows. Not that anyone's tried to figure it out, I'm sure. I'm inclined to think the warning is deliberate.

So...what? Should we be watching out for something that tells us exactly what we want to hear and be careful not to kill it or what?

...and for the record, I dislike these shadow-chicks.

[snort] I don't blame you.

I've never been good at figuring out their cryptic messages. But then, I don't have the background in this world's myths and stories that others do. No doubt someone knows the story to which they're referring.

[Voice]

I dunno. The only like...fairy tale I know about that has a magic mirror is Snow White. Or that movie with the comedy guy playing an ogre. [He shrugs.]

[Voice]

Then it's best to at least brace yourself. There's really no telling what this foreshadows. The last couple of times that I remember have been something of an upheaval, though.

[Voice]

[He groans again and there's the sound of him hitting his head into the wall.]

I'll keep an eye out for overly agreeable people and stuff from the Fairy Tales.

[Voice]

The metaphor could run even deeper than that. Something about reflections, lies, anything like that.

Yeah, I just figure everyone else can look for the deeper stuff since they might jump there. Someone's gotta make sure the simple stuff doesn't waddle up and bite us in the ass, right?
