The Tale of the Magic Mirror [video; anon by proxy]

[A blank wall. Or a backdrop. Suddenly, the shadow of a girl with a giant bow in her hair, wearing a short skirt and puff-sleeve blouse, marches into view.]

Extra! Extra!

[And now she's holding up a frame, peering through. The shadow with the braid, B-ko, appears with clasped hands.]

Mirror mirror on the wall, please tell me how my hair looks today!

[The one with the frame, A-ko, tilts her head.]

It looks absolutely wonderful! You are surely the fairest in the land!

[B-ko pops up again, wearing a hat and trench coat. She speaks in a slightly deeper voice.]

Mirror mirror on the wall, please tell me how my outfit looks today.

[A-ko tilts her head in the opposite direction.]

It looks absolutely wonderful! You are surely the fairest in the land!

[B-ko pops up once more, this time with glasses and a mustache. She speaks in an even deeper voice.]

Mirror mirror on the wall, please tell me how my mustache looks today.

[A-ko tilts her head back the other way.]

It looks absolutely wonderful! You are surely the fairest in the land!

[B-ko pulls off her disguise, pointing an accusing finger at the mirror.]

I finally see what your game is! You'll tell anyone they're the fairest in the land, no matter who they are.

[A-ko spins the frame around and around.]

But that's the role of a magic mirror! They tell you exactly what you want to hear. Any normal glass can show you the truth!

[B-ko readies a baseball bat.]

You're the reason that guy I liked at school never asked me to the dance!

[A-ko backs away, still clutching the mirror.]

You can't break a mirror! It's seven years bad luck!

[The sound of breaking glass.]

[Pause.]

It really is all right.

It's what I do for my. Friends.

[It's weird on his tongue.]

There is far more weighing me down than whatever this message means.

[His voice is strained.]

We could talk about that

Yes. If you wanted that.

[Pause.]

What do you think they mean? The shadows, that is.

They're targeting reflections. Mirrors. What is a reflection, but a parallel? And what is this place, if not a universe with many parallels?

[Doubtful, with some anxiety:]

But this place isn't only telling us what we want to hear. [Beat.] Unless we're talking about the Porter's astounding inability to judge an import's character when she calls on them to be heroes. In which case this message is long overdue.

There are no heroes here, Katurian. Only hypocrites, prey and those clever enough to realize.

I'm just using the Porter's words.

There is no saving this population, Katurian. I've tried.

[Pause. Then, trembling, accusatory:]

What is that supposed to mean?

[identity profile] enigmaestro.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's fairly straightforward.

I don't know. I don't know.

Whatever it is, it'll be answered soon. I'm sure.
