[Video]

[Joel's in civvies today, a bit bruised up but recovering nicely. Sitting in his apartment, he sets a bottle of water down off screen and gives a little smile.]

Hi, Network. I'd just like to apologize to the people that actually hired me but I'm closing down that delivery service of mine. It's really not working out at all. If someone still really needs something brought somewhere fast, I'll do it but the service is otherwise done for.

[He looks away from the camera for a moment.] Everyone make it out of that zombie craziness okay?

[He sits up a bit straighter before continuing with this part.]

I'm sorry to bother you when you're probably really busy but I wanted to talk to you about something, sir. I wanted to know if there was a way I could help out the police force. Be of some use to you all here helping people in the City.

[He gives a small frown and single-shouldered shrug.]

Not even close to what I was hoping for.

[[shifts it to video because heck, if Joel was going to... and hey, it was private. So get a picture of Bakura in his living room with his cat asleep on his lap.]]

That really sucks. It seemed like a pretty good idea too.

[He nods.]

I thought so too but with so many people offering to do the same thing for free and people trusting the Network more than I thought they did. [Joel shrugs.] Add on to that non-Imports seemed uninterested entirely and it just didn't work out.

Hard to make a business out of things others do for free.

If you want to do something like that for the store, the offer's still open. Can't promise anything exciting or interesting, but if you need a job...

[[trails off a moment.]]

So are you all right? [[because he has noticed the slightly bruised look there]]

It is. I didn't think there would be that many people doing it for free.

Thanks, Bakura. I'll help you out still if you need it but you don't have to pay me. I'm thinking I'll start focusing more on being a superhero. Helping people if I can. I'm going to ask the police force if there's something I can do to help them more.

[Joel smiles and gives a quick nod.] I'm okay. Just got a little banged up during all the fighting.

I wouldn't have you just work for nothing. That wouldn't be very fair.

I'm sure the police always need more help. There's a lot that... [[trails off a moment]] There's a lot that they just can't do. Maybe with more people, they might have a better chance. [[He's mostly over his bitter at the cops. Mostly.]]

And as long as you're all right. [[a faint smile]]

Are you sure?

I just want to help. Maybe my speed can be of some use to them. [He sighs a little.]

I'm okay. [A beat.] Are you okay? Didn't get caught up in all the fighting?

Of course I'm sure. The store's a business, after all.

[[an awkward pause]] I... didn't really notice it was going on... [[admits with some embarrassment and a touch of shame.]] I haven't been really getting out much... [[or paying attention to the world around him. Depression is a hell of a drug]]

You didn't? [He's surprised.] Wow, even with all that music? Your apartment must have some great sound proofing.

We're in Brooklyn. [[shrugs]] I don't think they got this far. It was mostly around Central Park, wasn't it?

I umm...I don't know. [He offers a sheepish smile, rubbing the back of his neck.] I was mostly dealing with the first ones I saw and then the group at City Hall. Spent more time plucking people out of danger than fighting and tracking really.

[[nods]] Make sense. Working with what you have, ne? [[which is why he was always clean up crew. Though zombies...

Meh.]]

I think Hell Towers just is in a lucky spot. There's a lot of things that hit Manhattan and ignore the rest of the boroughs.

[He pauses and looks up thoughtfully.] I think I'm going to take a quick trip out there. Just to make sure there aren't any villains hiding and plotting in the ignored boroughs.

[[covers a small laugh]]

Might be a good idea. The specter of too many leftovers may be starting to take hold of my fridge, but it's hard to tell.

[[why yes that was a very round about way of saying he's welcome to come over for something to eat]]

The specter of wha... [A pause as his brain catches up. Confusion melts into surprise and then a smile.] Sure, I'll come over to help get rid of that pesky specter.

[[a warm smile]] See you soon.

[He smiles right back.] I'll come by tonight to help out dealing with that which haunts your fridge.

Thanks. I just keep cooking too much still. I got so used to cooking for 10 people... [[trails off slightly before shaking his head to try and dislodge the emo]]

[Joel looks down a moment.] I know how that can be. [He takes a deep breath.]

[[a bit of a near wince there because he knows Joel misses his family...]]

Sorry...

It's alright. [He shakes his head.] Want me to bring anything with me when I come by? I can pick up dessert.

Up to you.

Oh, and I picked up some packs at the store when I stopped by earlier, if you want to bring your deck.

Alright. I'll surprise you.

You picked some up too? [Sheepish smile.] I'll bring my deck.

Yeah. New expansion was out. [[looks a bit sheepish to admit.]] So I ordered an extra box for the store and bought it myself. Hadn't gotten any in a while, so I figured may as well.

[Joel chuckles a little.] Did you get anything good in the box? One of the packs I bought had a nice new fusion I'm hoping I get to try.

I actually haven't opened them yet, [[admits, still sheepish.]] Going through them with friends is more fun than just opening a whole box by yourself!

Well, sounds like we've got a fun night planned. [He smiles.]

[[a nod and an almost shy smile this time]]

Yeah.

I'm all right- at least some of 'em didn't die this time.

Did you do much fighting? [A beat.] This has happened before?

Yeah- I fought 'em, and this happened twice before.

This same exact thing or just similar? [He's worried.]

Just similar. But there wasn't music those times.

[Joel nods slightly.] I hope it doesn't happen again. The whole fight at City Hall was just insane. Those zombie things and the weird powers a couple of them had. And what that woman did to the Sentry...[He shakes his head.]

You were the guy at City Hall, weren't you? Thanks for your help.

[Joel nods, summoning up his costume around himself as proof.]

Yessir, that was me. I was wondering if there might be some way I could help more.

[Hey cool instant costume]

Well, we're always looking for new personnel if that's what you're after.

[Pause]

How old are you, Houston?

[He pauses because he was not expecting that but quickly nods.] If I'm allowed, then I'd like to join up.

I'm seventeen for the next few months.

Hmm.

[Jack thinks for a moment]

In that case, how would you like to be a superpowered intern? At least for the next few months.

It sounds good to me, sir.

Great. You've got super speed, right? You'll be a real asset with the files, then. And once you're older we can see about bumping you up to a full officer.

How soon can you start?

Well it's a time manipulation thing actually but it lets me simulate just about anything a speedster can do, sir.

I can be there first thing tomorrow morning. Or even right now if you'd like.

Time manipulation? You don't mean time travel, right?

[He nods.] It's not time travel. Just changing how time flows relative to myself so I can move really fast.

All right, sounds handy. You can come in tomorrow and we'll get you started.

I'll be straight with you, it's not going to be glamorous. You'll be fetching a lot of coffee, spending a lot of time around file cabinets. But you'll be helping us do our jobs, and that counts for a lot.

Great. Looking forward to it.

That's good. Not after glamor. Had more than enough glamor and fame in my life back home. [He chuckles a little.] Right.
