Day 4 - VOICE

Thursday's child has far to go. [ Only Calendar Man could make such a statement sound like a threat. Far to go to forget the past three days. At least he hadn't broken theme, there was that. He moves on quickly, and takes on a softer tone. ]

Today marks the beginning of December. World Aids Day, if you are keeping track of the holidays. There are quite a few in December. Ashura. Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Human Rights Day. The Winter Solstice. Saturnalia. Hanukkah. Christmas. Kwanzaa. New Year's Eve. More. I'm sure some of the visitors to this world have brought their own unique celebrations.

It is a time for gift giving, City. Do you plan on celebrating something this month?

You're welcome. It's kind of nice to talk about, although it doesn't really matter anymore, for reasons previously stated. Probably figuring out how we all fit in to this calendar in personal, individual ways, is something we should think about, because yeah, a wriggling day is like a birthday, sort of. Uh, the differences have to do with the troll life cycle and not timekeeping, though.

It is an important day for an individual, and that is what matters. You may choose your birthday here, if you cannot calculate the difference, or if you would prefer a different one. The day you were imported, or perhaps another significant date.

Okay. I guess I also didn't choose the day that my lusus picked me and we left the wriggling caves to build a hive together, so not picking my birthday here would also make sense. Uh. So my birthday is the 26th day of August, when I showed up.

I think that, probably, if I tried to choose a day, that would take a long time, and that I would always wonder if I shouldn't have picked another one.

You have quite an interesting culture, from what you have told me. It sounds unusual, from my perspective at least.

Yes. Uh, I'm six sweeps old, though, biologically. Er, that is, 13 human years.

Where did you get that sign, if you have no birthday?

I was assigned it. Uh, all trolls have a sign. We get them, based on our blood color. Heh, Taurus kind of sounds like Tavros. And uh, my lusus was a fairy bull.

[That and the GIGANTIC HONKING BULL HORNS on this grey skinned alien kid.]

[ He stays on voice, somewhat aware of his less-than-appealing appearance. His tone, while interested before, seems to be much more engaged now, but in a way seems more directed at himself than Tavros. ]

The name. The horns. The bull. The sign. It cannot be a coincidence. It fits.

If it would be okay, uh, could you tell me what this means to you?

The modern calendar is a solar calendar, based on the sun. Some calendars are lunar, based on the moon. But there are many systems of measuring time, and the stars include many.

The western zodiac has twelve symbols, roughly encompassing a year, as the sun passes over a constellation of stars. Each sign of the zodiac has their own meanings, associations. Taurus. The twentieth of April to the twentieth of May. It is represented by the bull and by the symbol on your shirt.

Okay. I've just looked this up, and yeah, there are twelve trolls who played the game where I come from, and the symbols of the zodiac are our own symbols. Aradia is Aries, Sollux is Gemini, Karkat is Cancer, Nepeta is Leo, Kanaya is Virgo, Terezi is Libra, V-Vriska is Scorpio, Equius is Saggitarius, Gamzee is Capricorn, Eridan is Aquarius and Feferi is Pisces. All in order too, from lowblood to highblood, huh.

This, makes some sense, actually. Our universe's session, uh, birthed the universe that has Earth in it, sort of, so there are odd points of overlap.

I guess maybe a day in that range would be more appropriate? Uh, I don't...really know about some of the stated characteristics, but I would not want to infringe on Kanaya's symbol in, I guess, a rude way.

[ There is a brief and utter silence on his end. ]

Twelve signs. Twelve - trolls. The Zodiac. With additional meaning. And you claim it is because this group of yours birthed our universe. Your twelve created our twelve. It is from you that we get our signs. In the dimension you are from, at least.

[ Another pause, before remembering Tavros' final comment.]

[Tavros listens to all this with clear interest on his face, but doesn't push or interrupt. The conversation is affecting this adult human male on levels that Tavros doesn't really understand, so he's just taking things as they come.]

Sure, it's, uh, pretty clear that you understand the meanings of the Earth calendar far better than I do.

Uh, for what it's worth, while this world seems to be a lot like that Earth, I think that it's on a timeline where no one ever played the game, so...it's not really plugged in to the timeline we're from. Clarity about how the causality of playing the game and the creation and destruction of various universes really works is a thing that is difficult to master, and thus far not very applicable in the City anyway. Aradia would be able to explain it better than I do, probably.

Your dimension, then, as suspected. Still. The connection is clear. An undeniable correlation.

Now, as for a birthday. Late April or early May. There's a poem, you know. April showers bring May flowers. April is known to be a rainy month, while May is a growing month. From there, you may pick a date.

Oh. Uh. I think I like flowers better than rain? So I should pick a date in May... What was the poem that you were saying before, about the days of the week?

If you want, although the day of the week a date is changes depending on the year. But you could choose based on next year's, I suppose.

It goes: Monday's child is fair of face, Tuesday's child is full of grace, Wednesday's child is full of woe, Thursday's child has far to go, Friday's child is happy and giving, Saturday's child works for a living, but the child who is born on the Sabbath Day is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

Man, days of the week are confusing! What if I decided on the day 13 years ago based on the poem? But also, picking a day like that, seems to be very self-aggrandizing, and embarrassing. Oh well. Maybe I will just say May 5th, because I like 5, and then it is still mostly close to April.

Is poetry also one of your interests? Do you dabble in the ancient art of slam poetry and rap offs?

I like poetry that is based on the calendar. There are a few, but I cannot say that -- slam poetry and rap offs are among my interests.

It is a Saturday next year. Works hard for a living. Also of note, it is Cinco de Mayo, a holiday for some.
