It's weird how it seems to always get randomly warm this time of year. On the other hand, I don't have to wear shoes and it's awesome.

This'll be my third winter in the City, if I'm counting right. Guess that means I'm 15, or will be sometime soon. [A pause.] Is there a way for me to be a legal adult or whatever before I'm 18, here?

You may be surprised with how common that can be on certain worlds. Though few things so troubling as the shambling undead who hunt the morning sands.

How incessantly? I've yet to encounter a single example, at present.

Well, it happened twice that I know of. Once when the cops who vanished came back, and once at Halloween.

Ah, well twice isn't so terrible.

Personally, I was barred from ever traveling beyond my hive as a little one due to the proximity from which they were in residence.

Wow, that's like. A lot of them. We couldn't really leave the base when the cops came back as zombies, but that passed pretty quickly.

Oh, yes! They were rather a permanent fixture of the landscape beyond my lawnring, it would have been far too dangerous to make any journey beyond it during the daylight hours.

But, due to aforementioned explanation, traveling under sunlight was inadvisable for the majority of trolls anyway.

...Huh. So trolls don't normally travel that much, do they?

I don't believe I'd say that, though I'm hardly an expert on the matter. The firm majority are far more nocturnal, and the few times I have ever had visitors it was during the dark hours.

But they still had to deal with the zombies to get there, yeah? Musta been rough.

[Hmmmm, thinking.]

I mean, we did some traveling at night too, back home. Like in that desert or just to avoid the Fire Nation goons. But not on a regular basis, I guess.

Oh, but undead tend to be as diurnal as myself, luckily for them. And Sollux, at least, was fully capable of levitating well above them.

What sort of journey had you undertaken, that you had need of such traveling?

Levitating? Whoa, that's awesome. Aang could fly with his staff and glide over the ground using a bit of wind sometimes, but he couldn't levitate.

Uh, we were on a mission to save the world, pretty much.

Telekinetic abilities are common in the lower castes, in fact. It might've occurred to me to be envious, but I had no limitations against such a maneuver in my dreams.

Saving the world can be a complicated duty, however. In our attempts to commit such action, we only succeeded in destroying our own. But, we at least created a new universe to stand in place of it, despite being barred from our own eventual entry into it.

[Damn. Destroyed it trying to save it? That's harsh. :X 'Scuse her while she tries to process that.]

It was..really hard back home, though not as bad as yours, I guess? Ozai wanted to rule the world. And he decided to finish that up by burning the Earth Kingdom to the ground.

This Ozai individual sought to accomplish this by overthrowing the current Empress, then? A very ambitious ploy, I imagine he must have had need to escape assassination on multiple occasions!

....No. That's not what he did at all. The world was supposed to have four countries. The Earth Kingdom, Water Tribes, Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation. That's how it works. Balance and stuff.

Like a hundred years ago the Fire Lord back then decided he wanted to try and take over the rest of the world. Ozai was just expanding on everything he did. And he could've done it if we hadn't stopped him. the Air Nomads are pretty much wiped out. The Southern Water Tribe lost all of its Waterbenders except Katara. Northern Tribe's okay, so I hear. The Earth Kingdom was holding together okay.

And then the comet came and Ozai tried to burn us to the ground. Sokka, Suki, and me took out his airship fleet while Aang took care of him. And Katara and Zuko handled Zuko's sister.

This Fire Tribe was the ruling class, then, and Ozai had unkind intentions toward those on positions below?

...No, it wasn't like that all.

Ozai tried to make himself into the Emperor, when there were previously four different nations until the Air Nomads were wiped out. He upset the balance. He wanted everyone else to be slaves to the Fire Nation, pretty much.

So you mean to say that your society lacked a single ruler, prior to his attempt?

What a curious possibility!

Yeah. The four nations were always separate, and they need to stay separate, to keep the balance. That's what the Avatar cycle is for, keeping the balance.

Well, balance expresses itself in various ways, and then further complicates itself through the cyclical nature of time.

Though even if certain aspects of Alternia were in...their own form of balance, I don't suppose that could be said overall. Otherwise, my own psoition would serve as a sort of fulcrum to the hemospectrum, despite its rarity.

The whole purpose of the Avatar cycle is to keep the world in balance. The Avatar is the only person who can master all types of 'bending. When one dies, the next Avatar incarnation is in the next nation of the cycle, which is why it's important for there to be all four nations.

So then, this Ozai acted in disrespect to the Avatar, in an attempt to prevent their advent?

Something like that, yeah.

It's curious to hear of a world that vies for balance rather than dominance. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, given the general lessening in such impulses I've recognized in humans, but it does sound like a pleasant aspiration.
