In 1914, in the middle of World War I, there was something called the Christmas Armistice. Around Christmas and New Years, there was an unspoken end to fighting just for the Holidays, although it was part of a trend that soldiers were just slowly becoming acclimated to not fighting [ A tap, tap, tap of his pen. ] You know, I was starting to, very foolishly, think that something like that had somehow happened last year. Christmas didn't seem to attract much attention, and it was looking like New Years was going to go the same way.

I suppose that was a bit too optimistic, wasn't it? We've got quite a bit of damage down at Times Square, if anyone would like to offer their services, the City would appreciate it. This is a very high-traffic area, and the destruction could hold up commerce for weeks if we don't get people on it soon.

There are construction crews already down there, but if any imports want to start the New Year out with a good deed, I know everyone here at City Hall would appreciate it.

[ Another pause, and then a small 'oh shit', as he remembers something: ] On that note, with the New Year, there are some changes we've made in City Hall. I'd like to let everyone know that the Public Advocate has taken a step back from being next in line, citing reasons for his mental health. [ a soft snort. Dude, this place is stressful. ] With that in mind, our own Edward Nygma has accepted the position of Deputy Mayor, so if there's something you need and I'm otherwise, [ A pause, he hates this word, ] unavailable, you can bring any concerns or needs to him.

Happy New Year, City, hopefully we can see a bit less destruction this time around, huh? Don't want to take all the thunder away from Mayan prophecies, do we?

Hey, that was fast.

I don't exactly have somewhere to be.

[Blue stands up and smiles]

Thanks for at least meeting with me.

[ he turns his head into the office, and then turns to head in.]

It's no problem, it's generally pretty slow on Sundays.

[Blue moves to follow]

This is why you need someone to delegate your work. So you don't have to come in on Sundays.

[ he kind of laughs ]

Workaholic, what can I say?

Mm, my old boss was, too.

Oh yeah? Sounds about like every mayor I've ever known.

You're probably right. I mean there is probably one or two exceptions, but....

They're few and far between. They also don't last very long for a reason.

[ He sits behind his desk, and leans back a bit. ]

So you're sixteen, and you've already been the assistant Mayor's assistant?

I lived in a small town.

Really small, apparently. [ A laugh, he thinks he's funny. ]

Alright, so tell me a bit about what your job entailed?

[No. Comment.]

I managed her appointments, did a lot of filing and recording, handled her business dealings, and occasionally liasoned with the Farm - uh, the city I lived in owned a pretty big farm, that is - and any grunt work like painting or lifting. I also did most of the paperwork.

Paperwork, huh? [ Mitch grins a bit. He hates paperwork ]

Normally, my intern would do that, but he's left. I don't have business dealings, though. [ He pauses. ] How are you with confidentiality?

Well, I would tell you, but then that would prove I'm no good with it, right?

[A slight grin.]

Don't worry, I don't spill the beans to anyone.

[ He just smiles ]

Well, at least you know enough to not sell out your old employer. You know how politics is, then.

What are your skills?

Besides the trumpet? I'm quick and organized. I can handle most computer programs but I know morse code, how to use a mimeograph, and any other office equipment you can throw at me.

I can also clean up a crime scene.

[And create a fake one]

Well, generally, we leave the crime scenes to the police, hm? [ A laugh, and a shake of his head. Small towns are an alien concept to him, really. ] Small towns.

I'll tell you what, we'll see how this goes. Are you in school?

Right now? I'm lucky I have a place to live.

You're sixteen, and you're not in school?

Honestly, I graduated from high school.

[In 1962.]

[ He peers at him, his eyebrows lifting. ]

Really? That definitely makes things a bit easier.

Yes. I mean I don't have my diploma here with me, but I did. I was in marching band.

[ A little laugh, definitely not mocking, but ah geekdom ]

Oh yeah? What did you play?

The trumpet!

[ His eyebrows lift, but he doesn't comment further on it. Mitch is a little music stupid ]
