I have been thinking about monsters.

The question of what humanity there may be found in monsters has already been asked and discussed many times. Do they have a soul, are they capable of love, and other romantic notions. [The Major can be heard scoffing] My interest is focused on the other side of the coin: what depths a human being may sink to before they receive the label ‘monster.’

One hears it thrown about of course: ‘you monster! You fiend! You mad demon!” [Laughter] Such vicious rhetoric! But do the people who say that really mean someone is devoid of all humanity? That they lack the things which truly make a genuine human?

A claim like that carries great implications, you know. A brief look at the history of humanity shows that a great many of us have done things which might prompt some to cry ‘monster!’ Would it follow then, that a significant portion of humans on this Earth have never been human at all? Whatever would that mean for the concept of ‘human?’

These questions are of keen interest to me. And part of that interest is what you think on the matter.

It's overused and usually out of context.

Like 'awesome'. Few things are genuinely awesome, and yet society- especially Americans- seem to point out everything in life as such.

Oh yes! The shameless misuse of hyperbole in this ridiculous society is one of the most absurd things about America. They seem bent on ruining every decent word in their language. 'Epic', for instance. Listening to them carry on, you would think it was used to describe brushing one's teeth, not the works of Homer!

Americans never were much good with language. Or anything else for that matter. They have an awful habit of taking something and trying to make it their own.

Every culture has its own strengths and weaknesses. I have always found the Yankee impulse towards assimilation to be both.

They do like a good war. Have you ever considered becoming an American citizen?

Perish the very thought! Although our kind does have a sort of citizenship here, do we not?

True. Unfortunately. Thank God we don't have to swear in.

A small yet precious blessing, to be sure. It's a pity my home country couldn't extend the same courtesy to me. Ah, but of course it is not the same place it used to be.

What about you, Mister Bond? Has Her Majesty's Government in this world given any acknowledgment or kindness to their most famous servant?

Sadly, they've yet to show interest. The next aim is to go straight to the PM. And if not him, then the Queen.

Well, please don't give up! After all you have done for them, you deserve a bit of recognition. Even if most of your work was in another realm.

I'm so glad someone believes in me.

How far does that support stretch?

Well, if you needed help calling London, I would be happy to spot you a few quarters, for example.

But no loans for large amounts of money, or calling in big favours?

Hmmm, well now. I do seem to have some extra funds lying around. How 'large' and 'big' are you envisioning?

I'm just trying to work out who I can crawl to when I'm in need.

[Laughter] I assure you, I will never have any problem with seeing you crawl, Mister Bond. Especially to me.
