I have been thinking about monsters.

The question of what humanity there may be found in monsters has already been asked and discussed many times. Do they have a soul, are they capable of love, and other romantic notions. [The Major can be heard scoffing] My interest is focused on the other side of the coin: what depths a human being may sink to before they receive the label ‘monster.’

One hears it thrown about of course: ‘you monster! You fiend! You mad demon!” [Laughter] Such vicious rhetoric! But do the people who say that really mean someone is devoid of all humanity? That they lack the things which truly make a genuine human?

A claim like that carries great implications, you know. A brief look at the history of humanity shows that a great many of us have done things which might prompt some to cry ‘monster!’ Would it follow then, that a significant portion of humans on this Earth have never been human at all? Whatever would that mean for the concept of ‘human?’

These questions are of keen interest to me. And part of that interest is what you think on the matter.

I much prefer being human as well. So in your world, no matter what horrors a human perpetrates, they cannot justly be called 'monster?'

I think people have, it is kinda an insult. But it'd get confusing really fast, doncha think? What's wrong with calling someone "evil"? That's way easier.

It is a thing of words. People are evil. People become monsters. To call your enemy a monster is to shove them away from you, to create the distance that makes it easier to strike them down.

I didn't know you could lower somebody's stats by calling them a monster.

Um, is that code for stupid? 'Cause I know I'm not that smart.

It implies a particular type of stupidity, which can sometimes also be a type of intelligence. In this case, your literal mind has been quite engaging for me.

Are you saying I'm dumb and smart at the same time? Don't those kinda cancel each other out?

[Snickering] What I am saying... is that you are most entertaining. What are you called?

That's what I'm saying, mister Major! If everybody calls everybody else a monster, it'd get confusing really fast.

It really would, wouldn't it? The distinction between human and monster is important, that is what I have been saying! That is why the foolishness of calling people monsters and monsters people must be recognized.

Yeah! That's right! People should call people people, and people should call monsters monsters!

Precisely. And monsters should have the honesty to do the very same!
