I have been thinking about monsters.

The question of what humanity there may be found in monsters has already been asked and discussed many times. Do they have a soul, are they capable of love, and other romantic notions. [The Major can be heard scoffing] My interest is focused on the other side of the coin: what depths a human being may sink to before they receive the label ‘monster.’

One hears it thrown about of course: ‘you monster! You fiend! You mad demon!” [Laughter] Such vicious rhetoric! But do the people who say that really mean someone is devoid of all humanity? That they lack the things which truly make a genuine human?

A claim like that carries great implications, you know. A brief look at the history of humanity shows that a great many of us have done things which might prompt some to cry ‘monster!’ Would it follow then, that a significant portion of humans on this Earth have never been human at all? Whatever would that mean for the concept of ‘human?’

These questions are of keen interest to me. And part of that interest is what you think on the matter.

I'm sure very few of those deemed "monsters" or "demons" would care for the association with humanity, as it is.

There are many who do. The actions that earn their moniker may be done in the cause of humanity or one of its aspects: 'progress', 'country', 'love.' Who would accept being called a monster for love?

They should not hold the points of views of the simplistic to importance, if that's the case. For every righteous crusade there will be protestors. Those who fear change so much that they will challenge the men who create it. Stagnation is the true monster in any world. Progress is an imperative.

How uplifting of you. I daresay you sound like a Bolshevik. Is that the imperative you think of? World union, socialist utopia, total peace?

No.

[ There's a delay. ]

And yes.

One who builds their own dreams of paradise, then. Always to exist only in your own mind. Yours must be a life of continuing disappointment and frustration with the realities of this world.

Oh, not at all. I'm a patient person, you must understand, dear Major. I know that my dream is achievable, in time -- yes, perhaps even more so here than it could be back home. All it takes is patience, of which I have centuries worth.

Your time is not limitless, my dear utopian friend. There is no such thing as a true immortal. Even for Imports. The situation created by the Porter these past few years cannot possibly last forever.

But I am certain that you are making the best of what time you have. Isn't that right?

Highly debatable. But fret not; my time here will be utilized much more swiftly. Perhaps you may bear witness.

I will look forward to watching your efforts unfold, then. There are few things more exciting than watching a man struggle with all his might against something insurmountable.

You only believe that it's insurmountable because no one has succeeded yet.

Incorrect. I believe it because I know certain things about this world, and about humanity.

As do I. We must agree to disagree -- until one of us can be proven right, of course.
