It's telling to examine the similarities in emotional and computing vulnerabilities.

Many of the same security problems that existed in IPv4's implementation were not corrected in IPv6 (buffer overflows). One careless programmer can make a hundred thousand problems down the line with a brief lapse of attention (bounds checking). Constant vigilance and repeated testing of personal defenses are the only sure methods of safety.

And safety is a target in motion.

Generally speaking: how many times do you have to make the same mistake before you learn? Only once? Twice?

A hundred times?

In learning how to stop making certain mistakes? I do. I don't think there's anyone out there that doesn't.

I've learned by now to not make the mistake of questioning some of the crazy things my younger brother did or to talk with my other brother about certain things.

My brother ranted about things like race relations and stereotypes sometimes. It was easier on my head to just not engage him in those conversations. That and religion.

That or just getting into the conversation at all. It's never worth it.

I tried for about three years and got nowhere though. I don't think I'm the one that can get through to him on those subjects.

I didn't mean it like that. [There's a pause where he gives an unseen shrug.] I'm just going to continue skipping those conversations with him to save myself the headaches. [If he ever goes home anyway.]
