It is the second Sunday of May.

I wonder how many of you can pay tribute to your mothers in this City? Many of you have probably been separated from your mothers. Even those whose mothers have gone cannot even visit their grave. How many mothers have been torn from their children?

[ Pause. ]

You are aware already that Eridan accomplished our race's final termination, but have you yet been informed of the method by which he did so?

No, I believe I am still ignorant.

[ she takes a deep breath before beginning ]

Trolls don't reproduce directly as humans do. Our eggs are brooded through an intermediary, a Mother Grub by name. My lusus was one such creature, but she abandoned the caverns as a virgin to raise me, an undertaking which doomed her to an early death.

Upon that occurrence, she had arranged for me to inherit her Matriorb, which, when hatch at the opportune moment, would produce a larva that would eventually mature into a replacement, allowing us to repopulate despite the eradication of our planet.

To protect and care for the orb was more than merely my duty, it was my very life's purpose. And he robbed me of that by destroying the orb as I was preparing it for incubation.

[ He listens so very intently, soaking in the information. ]

A crime like no other. And one so personal to you as well. I think, then, that today must be filled with such sadness, that no one could possibly comprehend.

[ she squares her jaw and turns away from the screen ]

No, and I don't expect that they should be obligated to, either.

No, no one is. And very few even attempt to try.

I'd prefer they didn't take such action merely for my own sake, either way.

All you need is yourself. [ So calmly put, as if it were fact. ]

[ she ponders on that for a long moment. what good is she with just herself? where would she be if she had no one else? what would she even have to keep her going?

her glow waivers. she doesn't want to think about this. ]

I don't believe I could subscribe to so extreme a conclusion. What inspired you to conceive of it?

Ah, I merely meant you seem self-sufficient. [ He's back-peddling now, trying to appease her. In all honesty, giving comfort isn't one of his strong points but he's making an extra effort for a troll. ]

The only manner in which I'm concerned with the sufficiency of my self is in my ability to care for the others.

They are important to you. Your friends. To be self sufficient on your own behalf, however, can be effective. It means that you do not require anyone to care for you.

[ wow. someone finally gets what she's always been saying just as she isn't really feeling it. ]

Children should not have to care for their mother, she needs to be the one to provide support.

And in this she will find her own satisfaction, yes? Her own matters ultimately moot in the face of their needs.

But they often tend to disagree, in my experience.

It is difficult for children to be as sensible.

They only worry excessively and insist that I'm overloading my burden and ignoring aspects which genuinely don't even matter! Or worse, imply that I'm being unreasonable in adopting such duties to begin with.

Someone needs to play that role, and it chose you. That is not unreasonable.

And one cannot be so childish as to ignore its importance. Duties exist to be minded, and its better that one adopt to maturity necessary to meet them.

I'm sure the others mean well with their insinuations, but such considerations are really just a waste of both their time and my own.

Precisely. One has their responsibilities, and must work within those responsibilities to the best of their abilities. Others may try to get you to stop, or worse - convince you that it is not your duty at all. But you must continue on.

I wish I had advice on how to get them to stop insisting, but unfortunately I do not.

I've seen how they handle themselves without proper management, and they really can court the most troublesome messes. I won't pretend to lead them, but a proper leader will need some sort of assistance in this manner, to ensure that our charges are fed, clothed, sheltered, protected, and kept in good health.

You speak as from experience, I wasn't aware you had such parental aspirations.

Only parental in the metaphorical sense. [ The calendar counts as his child, right? ] My situation is different, I do not have such a group to take care of. I can, however, respect your remarkable efforts. Knowing your charges, it is easy to see how... difficult they may sometimes be.

...I have perhaps been of little assistance in that regard.
