[The sound of sporadic fireworks can be heard in the background as Midii's face appears, hands tightly covering her ears. The poor girl's eyes are red, voice quivering when she speaks. She appears to be huddled beneath an outdoor table, knees pulled up to her chest.]

I thought your American Independence Day was not until tomorrow, yet people have been setting these fireworks off since--

[Another explosion in the sky, loud enough to cause her to visibly jump, letting out a small yelp. She looks close to tears.]

Is there some place I can go where I will not hear them?

I am not sure. I think it is more the fact that it is somebody she recognizes from her world.

I forget how fortunate I was to have had people from my world already here when I arrived.

It depends on who those people are.

That's true. In my case it was people I considered family.

Yes, I remember our conversation about that.

Of course the city has proven what I've always said. Family is what you make it. So many of us from so many places and look how many families there are. It's amazing really.

[A nod, and she pulls her knees in a little tighter as another wave go off in the background]

[Boyd frowned and opened his mouth for a moment before reconsidering and shutting it. Not yet, he could tell her about the tech another day.]

[And speaking of family...]

Max said she is going to work on soundproofing our apartment.

Do you have any suggestions that would help us?

[Oh the things Boyd knew about sound proofing.]

I do. One of them being to be particular in your materials selection. I have list on my work computer of some of the ones we've found most effective. Also work slow, take your time. When you're ripping into walls like that mistakes are expensive.

Also while I'm sure you'll be able to make the apartment much quieter to truly soundproof something you have to design and build it from the ground up to be that way.

[She listens carefully. Obviously, none of this was something she would be able to do that night, but it was all good to know for future reference.]

I will tell Max.

Let her know she can call me if she needs help with it in anyway. If nothing else I'd be happy to strong arm the material suppliers into giving her a decent rate.

That would be especially helpful. I know it must have cost her a lot to move us to a larger apartment in the first place.

I'm sure it did and I'd offer to buy the materials, but I'm not sure Max would accept me helping that much.

She would not even let me offer her the money I have saved up since arriving.

Really? Interesting.

I think she just wants to so everyone she can take care of you without needing help. It's stubborn, but I can understand the feeling and she does seem to be managing it quite well so far.
