[The sound of sporadic fireworks can be heard in the background as Midii's face appears, hands tightly covering her ears. The poor girl's eyes are red, voice quivering when she speaks. She appears to be huddled beneath an outdoor table, knees pulled up to her chest.]

I thought your American Independence Day was not until tomorrow, yet people have been setting these fireworks off since--

[Another explosion in the sky, loud enough to cause her to visibly jump, letting out a small yelp. She looks close to tears.]

Is there some place I can go where I will not hear them?

Sounds pretty doable. [ beat. this is definitely not the right time to bring up why Midii's wandering around after dark, that'll have to be saved for a later time. ]

[The irony is that, for once, Midii would have been home early...if it hadn't been for the fireworks rooting her to the spot]

What did you get up to today while I was at work?

I was at the library, mostly.

They just received some new French books, and I wanted to read them.

Were they good books?

One of them was, yes.

It was getting late by the time I finished, so I have not gotten to any others yet.

I told the Librarian you were busy that day, so she helped me fill out the forms to get one.

Good work. Did you check the others out, or should we do that tomorrow?

Gretel said she was going to bring some books for me tomorrow.

But I can always go back another time. Whenever the fireworks stop.

They may not entirely stop for a few days. But if Gretel wants to come over tomorrow, that's fine. It would be nice.

[She's heard that already, but the thought of having to deal with this for several more days once again causes her to groan]

One day is bad enough.

Why are they still setting them off even when it is not the 4th?

We'll make sure you can't hear them. And maybe next year I'll think enough to plan ahead for it.

A lot of people really enjoy fireworks, so any excuse to keep setting them off will work for them.

Is this the only time people set them off?

[/also making mental notes of her own for the future]

New Year's Eve is also popular, but those are the only two I can think of.

[She couldn't remember any fireworks this past New Years'. Most likely, they hadn't gone off until after she went to bed.]

So I should be okay the rest of the year after this?

[ a faint sigh of relief. She knows Dick will make sure Midii's taken care of. ] Good. He's a good guy, he'll keep you safe.

[She was already fairly sure of this from her past encounter with him, but hearing Max say it makes her trust him all the more.]
