Well, I wouldnt say that, but maybe it would be handy if you needed to know, err, if something was spoiled. Or poisoned. Or if you needed to find food that is still edible even after someone's thrown it away...

You'd be surprised what people throw out that's still perfectly edible! A lot of convenience stores get rid of food that people can still eat just because it's not as fresh anymore. Though I think it depends on the country, too...
