[ hello, city. there is a slightly confused, slightly sheepish looking guy in a drivesuit peering at his communicator from what looks like a dull, undecorated mac apartment.

The pamphlet said there was a network on this thing, so I hope this is broadcasting right. [ he rubs at the back of his head with a gloved hand. ] Does anyone have any power tools on hand? That's apparently not something that comes with a complimentary apartment, and I need some to get the suit off.

Yeah, she, uh. Didn't come with me. I wish she could've though; she's amazing. Two hundred sixty feet tall, and nearly two thousand tons of pure badass beauty. Solid iron hull, painted blue on the outsides, and built like nothing else. She's got a pretty awesome plasma blaster and a retractable chain sword on the left arm.

Yeah, a chain sword. That was one of my co-pilot's add-ons when Gipsy got retrofitted.

Mako's pretty amazing with it, too. Saved our asses with it more than once.

I can't imagine that's very logical. I mean, I did retrofit a suit for a friend of mine with an arsenal, but a chain sword sounds risky.

[exhort]

There's a bunch of Jaegers with some kind of blade attachment. One of the easiest ways to kill a kaiju is just to slice the thing open.

[liverletdie]

[ A pause. ] Monster in Japanese, right?

I don't know, I can think of a few other ways to take down a monster that doesn't involve a blade.

[exhort]

Yeah. The kaiju are the whole reason we built Jaegers. They started attacking and we couldn't take them down reliably with anything but nukes. You can probably guess why we wanted alternatives.

[liverletdie]

Yikes. Just nukes, huh? Well, I guess where there's a will, there's a way. Not my preferred method, but if you have to do it, you have to.

How bad were their attacks.

[exhort]

God-awful. I can't even begin to think of how many lives we lost in the war against them.

[liverletdie]

Mm. I see.

Then you did what you had to, with what you could. As ridiculous as it sounds, I can't blame you.

Desperate times, and all that. I understand that sentiment entirely. Especially developing tech for a specific purpose, and hoping it works.

[exhort]

Yeah, and we had to put 'em together pretty fast. I think we had the first Mark I Jaegers up and running in around a year after the idea was first pitched to the Pan-Pacific governments.

[liverletdie]

About a year? [ He doesn't sound impressed, but then again. ]

That's not bad, when bureaucracy's involved.

[exhort]

[ not everyone can design new technology and build massive machines in a weekend, tony ]

Yeah, it might have gone faster if there weren't so many politicians involved.

That's always the kicker. That's why I never went for that sort of thing. Being Secretary of Defense was bad enough.
