This device allowed me access to some very interesting posts, but I'm hard-pressed to take some of this seriously. I know I'm not dreaming; everything is too linear, aside from the initial disconnect of finding myself here. Please allow me to present the facts as I understand them, and feel free to correct any errors I've made.
  1. There is no return from this place.
  2. People with "superpowers" exist.
  3. So do sentient robots.
  4. As do Iron Man and Captain America.
  5. This city is not New York, despite looking very much like it, but "the City".
  6. ... We are... in another universe.
I'm aware of string theory but as a psychiatrist, quantum physics have never been a part of my studies. I doubt I would understand any explanation of how I got here, but I would appreciate an explanation of what I'm supposed to do here. I am in the criminal justice field, but I doubt that's what was meant by "hero".

Not everyone's a hero here. Not everyone who isn't a hero is a villain either. Some of us are just waiting out our time until we can go home.

Also, the robots are metal anymore. It seems the 'porter changes anyone who isn't human or alive into one.

Not that I know of. People leave randomly.

[His tone turns bitter.] We didn't need that. If you can't function in your original form, you can't function any better in a different one.

[laughs; it probably sounds half insane]

Nor does the person who brought us here. Which would be one of the Iron Mans. There are two of them, but only one is the real one, or something.
