It's weird how it seems to always get randomly warm this time of year. On the other hand, I don't have to wear shoes and it's awesome.

This'll be my third winter in the City, if I'm counting right. Guess that means I'm 15, or will be sometime soon. [A pause.] Is there a way for me to be a legal adult or whatever before I'm 18, here?

Not our native sun, at least. Trolls tend to be nocturnal because they find the heat quite blistering! In fact, the only one among my friends here to have directly viewed it aside from myself was left blind by even the momentary sight.

...That's Terezi, right? We've talked a few times.

Huh. I was born blind, so I guess I can't even imagine what it would be like.

That would be her, yes.

But it's truly a magnificent thing to behold, I wish you were capable of viewing it! Like brilliant, benevolent rays of gold, shining their kindness upon everyone below. It's a much more friendly sun than the one I was accustomed to, though that one had a certain charm in its quiet power.

So that makes three of us here, huh. Counting the adult one.

Seeing things the way I do's pretty cool too, though. I can see anything that touches the ground, even tiny stuff like bugs and things.

Oh, this is related to the thinness of your footwear, then? Your own contact with the earth informs you of the contact achieved by other beings? And what should result if such an insect took flight instead?

Yeah, on both counts.

Um, I'd be able to hear it. If it landed anywhere, I could see it. But if it's silent and in the air, I'd be in trouble.

OH, but that's assuming it bore ill will toward you! It could be perfectly harmless, and I hope that would be the case.

...Well yeah. You'd hope.

[Sigh.] But that's not always the case. It wasn't back home and it isn't here.

No, I suppose it isn't a matter one may by any imagination consider a guaranteed lack of a potential threat, though I've typically found insects to be far friendlier.

I guess. Here, at least. Buzzard wasps, though. They're bad news.

The nomenclature has rather ghastly implications! They have achieved just such a silence, then?

Well, we ran into a best of them back home. Animals there are so much more interesting anyway.

Well, I appreciate to some degree that not every example of fauna on this planet is attempting to bring about our deaths.

Fair enough.

You may be surprised with how common that can be on certain worlds. Though few things so troubling as the shambling undead who hunt the morning sands.

We've, uh. Had that here too.

How incessantly? I've yet to encounter a single example, at present.

Well, it happened twice that I know of. Once when the cops who vanished came back, and once at Halloween.

Ah, well twice isn't so terrible.

Personally, I was barred from ever traveling beyond my hive as a little one due to the proximity from which they were in residence.

Wow, that's like. A lot of them. We couldn't really leave the base when the cops came back as zombies, but that passed pretty quickly.

Oh, yes! They were rather a permanent fixture of the landscape beyond my lawnring, it would have been far too dangerous to make any journey beyond it during the daylight hours.

But, due to aforementioned explanation, traveling under sunlight was inadvisable for the majority of trolls anyway.

...Huh. So trolls don't normally travel that much, do they?

I don't believe I'd say that, though I'm hardly an expert on the matter. The firm majority are far more nocturnal, and the few times I have ever had visitors it was during the dark hours.

But they still had to deal with the zombies to get there, yeah? Musta been rough.

[Hmmmm, thinking.]

I mean, we did some traveling at night too, back home. Like in that desert or just to avoid the Fire Nation goons. But not on a regular basis, I guess.

Oh, but undead tend to be as diurnal as myself, luckily for them. And Sollux, at least, was fully capable of levitating well above them.

What sort of journey had you undertaken, that you had need of such traveling?
