Day 10 - VIDEO

[ There is a pie. There is a pie with the π symbol on it. There is a pie with little sticky blueberry squiggly legs and little blueberry arms with little blueberry claws. It hisses, clawing at the camera.

Calendar Man’s hand comes down and picks up the communicator, away from the weird little pi monster. More little pie monsters – apple, cherry, strawberry rhubarb – try to grab the comm. Julian manages to take it away from then and looks into the camera. His eyebrow couldn’t possibly raise itself any more. ]

It is March 14th. 3/14.

I had been disinclined to count the so-called “Pi Day” as a real holiday, but evidently my powers disagree. [ A small smile spreads. ] That raises some intriguing implications, doesn’t it?

Tell me, City – how many of you celebrate unusual or uncommon holidays?

Yeah, keep watch.

[He's quiet a moment before a smile spreads across his face.] Y'know, I bet if you like...made little plush versions of those things, you could sell them and make a little bit of money.

[ Beat.


His face barely changes expression, but there's a slight twist to his mouth.]

It would be easier to use them to steal money.

[Curtis shakes his head and lets out a little sigh.]

Not really. I mean think about it. You try to steal with them and superheroes show up. Big fight, you get beat up, they probably get made into crumbs...not as easy, y'know.

True, but that would be more poignant than plush toys.

Yeah but you'd get the crap kicked out of you, get thrown in jail, and don't get money. Sell the toys and you get cash and people that like you.

It isn't about the money. The money doesn't matter. They say that holidays are merely products of consumerism but they're wrong. [ Whatever point Curtis was trying to make has gone completely over Julian's head, and now he doesn't even seem to be talking into the communicator any more. His voice is colder and his fingers tug at his lips. ]

It does not matter if the crime succeeds. It does not matter if you spend money to celebrate a holiday. What matters is the date, the method. No one remembers those that earn money. Crime is never forgotten, crime is remembered.

[Curtis just stares as Julian goes on about holidays and crime. He tilts his head to the side as Julian goes on and eventually shrugs.]

Are you sure? I mean, it seems like people will be more likely to remember that a superhero kicked some villain's butt than whatever crime they were trying to pull in the first place.

But they are part of it, don't you see? The heroes. They are part of the cycle too. [ His body shifts and his shoulders stiffen. ] It all fits into a pattern, even if someone like you could never understand it.

[cosmic_ring_hero]

Uh huh. [He stares a moment then shrugs.] Alright then. Just figured you might like the option that doesn't involve getting put into a prison hospital with a broken jaw is all.

There are some things worth getting a broken jaw for.
