Hey.

[Joe's quiet for a few moments, thinking over what he wants to say.]

I know what people are going to say but...
I still wanted to say I'm sorry. For anything that skrull did while pretending to be me. Anyone he hurt or anything he wrecked...just...sorry I got kidnapped and all that happened.

[He sighs.]

Hopefully I'll be able to get back to work soon.

[Gretel's sitting on the edge of her bed in the clinic, shoving things into a bag. Someone's ready to bolt.]

I don't really understand any of you. I've never had anyone be so interested in what I was doing or feeling or thinking before. I don't like it. It's weird. When people act that nice they usually want something in return but all I have is my magic and I heard that you've already got people who can do that here, so I have no idea what you want from me.

[Pausing as she shoves into her bag some jello she may or may not have stolen from someone down the hall.]

Miss Shahra. I don't know why you'd risk getting hurt to save me, but thank you. I'm kind of glad you did. I guess I owe you now.

Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November –
All the rest have thirty-one,
Save February, with twenty eight days clear,
And twenty-nine each leap year.

[ A pause. ] There are a few versions of that poem, that is one. [ Another, longer pause. His voice is soft and calm, and almost affectionate. ]

February has been an exciting month, hasn’t it? The first, the fourteenth, the twenty-fourth. There is still time to make a mark, take a leap. Or perhaps recover, and wait to see what March will bring. Today is February 29th, Leap Day. It only comes every four years - take advantage of it.

I am sure I should mention at some point that Logan, the Wolverine, has gone. That, or he is hiding very well. It has probably become noticeable at this point, however. I thought to quip last week about how we might be at least assured he wasn't a Skrull, but that would have surely been in poor taste.

That said, I hope that those recovered from Vulcanus are doing as well as they can be. My thoughts are with you and your loved ones. And... Everybody, really.

I wish I could suggest even some temporary alternative to this... Ach. What would you even call it? This heavy air. This-- This supposed pause between battles. There are things happening in this world, dreadful things, but... What do we do but wait? What can we do? Waiting for the next movement, that is always the maddening part.

After a certain point, there were always enough X-men for team sports, baseball or volleyball games in-between crises. That will be me getting off track and getting nostalgic, though. Even that simple thing has changed. Perhaps it would seem foolish, now, as I am sure it would here. Aside, it is not quite the season.

...Well. Been a while, you lot. [James clears his throat and looks a little awkward.]

I don't know if you noticed, what with all the -- people imitating other people and that sort of thing. Merlin, 's like someone passed out cauldrons full of Polyjuice potion. Anyway. Harry's back. --My son, for those of you who don't know.

And yes, I know there were magic classes at Xavier's when I was going there -- but are there still? Or is there somewhere else I could have him learn, aside from myself? He's eleven, hasn't even got his wand properly yet. Ollivander's doesn't exist here, so I'm not sure how I'll get him one, but we'll figure something out sooner or later.

Anyway. Any advice for me?

Leap day.

How many of you will leap?

Try this:

I'll answer one question, if you ask it properly, and providing it isn't offensively stupid.

Think carefully. I'm not burdened by time, and the next time I pay attention to mortal calendar affairs may be few and far between.

[ Perhaps predictably, the video isn't on Rachel's face - in fact, she can't be seen in the shot at all. Instead, the camera is held steadily on the Statue of Liberty, which is looking distinctly more Skrullish. It's a good view, bright afternoon sun and everything. After about fifteen seconds, she finally speaks, dry and unamused. ]

So that's new.

Someone should get on fixing that, City.

[ And the camera clicks off. ]

Got myself a new watch. Lost my old one, a while back. So that's nice.

[Pink shows off a Mickey Mouse watch. And less intentionally, a cheap hotel room and a nice little bit of a tan. Three guesses where he's been during all this Skrull stuff, and the first two don't count.]

I got to thinking, on the trip back. We were lucky. We wanted to leave, an' we could. But I know there's those that couldn't. No money, nowhere to go. Too young. None of those, things that should stop someone from being safe.

If I wanted to see about doing something about that -- a collective fund, maybe, I dunno, something for the kids... Anyone who knows how this place works, could help out. Interested?

[ It's public address time, also damage control time. Mitch is at the podium, all official like ]

Thanks for coming out here tonight, or tuning in. I wanted to thank everyone for their cool heads in light of recent weeks. I know the past month was extremely difficult, and the citizens of the City once again proved that they are adaptable and I'm proud that you call me Mayor, even through these troubling times.

And they are troubled. We've seen our City defaced, we've seen our national landmarks defaced, and even now, this is only secondary in the tragedy that's befallen us at the losses to the City as a whole, as well as the State of New York.

I've already expressed my condolences to his family, but I can't express my grief enough on the passing of Governor Moffat. What happened recently was nothing short of a tragedy, one punctuated by the loss of life of our citizens, and I know that both my fellow republicans, as well as the Governor's democratic companions are just as distraught as I am about the multiple catastrophes wev'e faced in recent weeks.

I hope that we can all come together, pull together, and make a change for the better. Suspicion and mistrust will only hurt us as not only a community, but the nation as a whole will suffer for it. We can, and we will pick up from this, City. I greatly hope everyone will join me in rebuilding, and moving forward.

But please, before we go to questions, I'd like to have a moment of silence for everyone that passed due to our recent troubles. The governor and citizen alike deserve the respect for the sacrifice they were foced to make for the City.

So who's investigating the Black Mask murder?

Or is justice just a sometimes treat?
